The Nigeria Union of Journalists Bauchi State Council has cautioned members, in particular practicing journalists, against participating in dishonest political campaigns for candidates and parties since doing so is against their code of ethics.

On November 3, 2022, Isah Garba Gadau, the union’s secretary, issued a press release alerting the members.

Gadau stated that the Union’s stance was chosen following an examination of member behavior and the developing political activities across the nation.

The union’s State Council Chairman, Umar Sa’idu, presided over the meeting when the decision to caution the media was made.

Actionable steps were demanded during the summit to end the impunity for crimes against journalists.

During the discussion, journalists were also reminded of their constitutional obligations to inform, educate, and enlighten the public on matters that might foster social cohesion, growth, and calm.

Sa’idu also gave the government and foreign organizations the responsibility of taking the appropriate steps to stop attacks on journalists.

He urged journalists to exercise caution while using political social media sites that may have an impact on their ability to behave professionally.

In order to reduce the prevalence of false news and hate speech, the conference gave its participants the assignment to more rigorously fact-check their news stories before distributing them to the public.
