The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has fired Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles’ coach.

On Sunday night, the Federation announced the news on its website.

Augustine Eguavoen has been named interim coach of the three-time African champions by the NFF.

“This is with immediate effect, and follows the termination of the relationship with Franco-German Gernot Rohr, who has been in charge of the three-time African champions for the past 64 months, and is Nigeria’s longest-serving manager,” the NFF said in a statement signed by its spokesman Ademola Olajire.

According to the federation, Eguavoen will work with Salisu Yusuf (Chief Coach), Paul Aigbogun (Assistant Coach), Joseph Yobo (Assistant Coach), Dr Terry Eguaoje (Assistant Coach), and Aloysius Agu after a virtual meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on Sunday (Goalkeeper Trainer). Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and Garba Lawal, all former Nigerian captains, have been recruited to provide technical and diplomatic support to the crew.

Eguavoen, a former Eagles captain, was the team’s coach at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where they finished third. He was the Super Eagles’ on-field captain when they won the Africa Cup for the first time on foreign soil in Tunisia 27 years ago.

He will now lead the team while they begin preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022, and until a permanent head coach is appointed.
