Lagos Government Bans Danfo Buses from October 1st

The Lagos State Government has clarified that, as of October 1, 2024, Danfo and Korope buses would not be permitted along the Lekki-Epe corridor.

The action is a part of the state’s Bus Reform Initiative, which aims to improve public transportation and better serve Lagos citizens, according to a statement made on Sunday by Sola Giwa, Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation.

Giwa clarified that the plan will bring mass transit buses for the Lekki-Epe route in response to media claims that Danfos would be prohibited in Lagos.

He stated that Danfo buses that meet the standards of the Vehicle Inspection Service will operate as mid-capacity buses.

In order to service the interior roads along the route from Obalende/CMS to Ajah, Korope buses that also meet the specifications will be incorporated into the First Mile Last Mile services.

The Special Adviser underlined that the situation of bus operations on the corridor is currently chaotic and that the situation’s Bus Reform Initiative must regulate and incorporate the informal transport sector.

He issued a warning, saying that anyone who breaks the rules will pay a fine and lose their cars if they don’t pay it. “We’ll assign designated routes and strictly monitor compliance,” he continued.

“We will be introducing an e-ticketing system because we prioritise the comfort of our passengers.” Giwa revealed that all questions and concerns were addressed at a stakeholders’ meeting on June 27.

Attendees included important transport operators, heads of transport unions, representatives from the State’s Ministry of Transportation, the Permanent Secretary of Transportation, and the Special Adviser. A communique was also signed.
