Kelechi Ndukwe Becomes First Nigerian Commander of the US Navy Warship

Captain Kelechi Ndukwe

Kelechi Ndukwe, the first Nigerian to command the US Navy War Ship, has been promoted to the rank of Captain.

In Millington, Tennessee, he received a promotion that culminated his 21-year US Navy career.

This comes after he became the first Nigerian to be appointed Commanding Officer of the USS Halsey (DDG-97), a guided-missile destroyer of the Arleigh Burke class, in 2021.

Ndukwe is an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame and the US Naval War College, starting in the Navy as an auxiliary officer in 2003, a year after obtaining his master’s degree in national security and strategy studies from the College.

In the past, Ndukwe has assumed leadership positions in the Navy. He worked as the minesweeper USS Devastator (MCM 6) commanding officer in Bahrain for two years until 2015; he also spent a year in 2010 as the weapons officer and combat systems officer of USS Fitzgerald in Yokosuka, Japan; and he spent two years until 2008 as the Navy’s congressional liaison officer in Washington, DC.

He has also held a position in the US military’s highest-ranking office, that of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS).

As a captain, Ndukwe will be in charge of the biggest navy ships in the US, including as aircraft carriers and submarines, as well as shore installations. When called upon, he will oversee missions and serve as the Navy’s diplomatic representative.
