Despite claims that Willie Obiano has been released, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says the former Governor of Anambra State has not been released.
In an interview with Punch, EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren revealed that Obiano, who was detained on the night of Thursday, March 17, 2022, was transferred to Abuja on Friday morning.
“He’s still with the commission. He was even transferred from Lagos to Abuja this morning,” Uwujaren said.
Obiano was arrested, according to Punch, for allegedly mismanaging the N17 billion Paris Club refund and security vote.
The ex-governor was detained just hours after handing over power to Chukwuma Soludo, the current governor of Anambra.
Obiano, who had been on the anti-graft agency’s notice, was on his way to Houston, Texas in the United States when he was apprehended at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammad International Airport.
The EFCC had asked the Nigeria Immigration Service to notify it whenever Obiano left the country.
When immigration authorities spotted him on Thursday, they reportedly contacted the EFCC, who quickly detained him and transported him to their office.
