EFCC invited the minister less than 30 minutes after President Tinubu announced her suspension from office.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has been suspended. The EFCC has invited her to appear in person at its Abuja headquarters to answer questions on potential fraud
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was informed on Monday by an EFCC source that the suspended minister had been called and was anticipated to appear at the commission’s headquarters on Tuesday.
According to the source, President Bola Tinubu suspended her from office due to a contentious ₦585 million transfer to a private bank account, which prompted the invitation.
On Monday, Tinubu gave Edu an immediate office suspension and gave the EFCC instructions to thoroughly look into the ministry’s operations. Less than half an hour after President Tinubu announced the minister’s suspension from office, she received the invitation.
The source claims that the EFCC had previously suggested the minister be suspended in order to allow for a full probe. According to the source, the suspension of the minister would allow the panel to fully carry out the President’s instructions.
“The commission has already sent an official invitation to her. We anticipate that she will accept the invitation and visit the commission on Tuesday to provide appropriate context for the matter at hand.”
