ECOWAS Lifts Sanctions on Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has decided to lift various sanctions it imposed on Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

This development occurs just one month after the three countries jointly declared their intention to leave the regional union.

ECOWAS imposed trade, economic, and other sanctions on these impacted nations in an effort to prevent military juntas from usurping democratically elected governments.

On Saturday, February 24, 2024, the body met in Abuja and decided to remove certain targeted sanctions against Mali as well as certain financial and economic sanctions against Niger.

Along with lifting sanctions against the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, the meeting was described as an extraordinary summit on the political, security, and peace conditions in the ECOWAS subregion.

President Bola Tinubu, the head of ECOWAS, expressed optimism about the prospects for enduring peace, stability, and development in the West African region during his inaugural statement.

Details to follow soon.
