Denmark aims to open embassies in Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia, as well as expand its diplomatic presence in Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana.
This decision came as the Danish foreign ministry unveiled a new strategy for collaboration with Africa, according to Reuters.
“One of the most important foreign policy questions of this century will be whether African countries will orient themselves more towards the East or the West,” a statement from the Danish foreign ministry said.
“We have a clear interest in African countries looking to us in Europe to set the course for their future,” it added.
At the same time, the Danish government announced that it will close its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso following a string of military coups in recent years.
Since 2020, Mali has been governed by a military junta, which has been fighting ethnic Tuareg rebels in the north with the help of Russia’s Wagner mercenary force after cutting military links with Western nations, particularly European Union countries.
Since then, relations between Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso and Western powers have deteriorated, with the three countries turning to Russia for assistance.
Frustration with the government’s incapacity to restore security has resulted in coups in Mali and Burkina Faso, which the Danish foreign ministry notes has severely limited manoeuvrability in the Sahel region.
