The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is now on strike, and Nigerian students’ protests might stop commerce at the Apapa port in Lagos on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
On Monday, the Ikeja Murtala International Airport access lanes were closed by the protesting students.
To express their discontent with the seven-month-old ASUU strike, the pupils, whose schools have been closed since February, withstood the torrential rain in Lagos on Monday.
All-access routes to the airport were blocked, which resulted in congestion across Lagos State’s Ikeja neighborhood and had an impact on flight operations since airlines had to rearrange flights.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has promised to march in protest against the industrial action at Apapa Ports on Tuesday.
Adegboye Olatunji, the association’s South West Coordinator, stated in an interview with ThePunch that they are sick of staying in.
“We will be moving to Apapa seaports on Tuesday if the Federal Government refuses to do the needful. Students are tired of staying at home,” Olatunji said.
Last week, Nigerians entering and leaving Lagos were stuck when students protesting the strike stopped the Lagos-Ibadan highway.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike since Monday, September 17, 2022. The Federal Government filed a petition with the National Industrial Court asking for an order from the court for ASUU to end its strike by Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
