Abbott Elementary will return for a second season on ABC! The statement was made today on the Abbott Elementary Twitter account by Ava Coleman, the fictitious principle of the eponymous Abbott Elementary (Janelle James).

The announcement of a second season also included a plea for donations to the very non-fictional DonorsChoose, an organization that assists teachers throughout the country manage funding and supplies. The nonprofit is a good fit for the series, which follows a motley crew of elementary school teachers working in a school at a time when educators are undervalued. Despite being a comedy, the show frequently shows the ways in which our public education systems are neglected. Teachers are frequently forced to make do with very little cash.

Quinta Brunson, who also developed the show, plays Janine Teagues, a second-grade public school teacher in Philadelphia who is devoted to her pupils and her job. Tyler James Williams, who portrays a replacement teacher with a crush on Janine, Lisa Ann Walter, who plays a fellow second-grade teacher, Chris Perfetti, and Sheryl Lee Ralph all appear in the series.

The show’s first season, received widespread critical praise. Despite the series’ great response and devoted fan base, a renewal announcement has been delayed. The announcement of the series’ renewal will come as a comfort to those who have been concerned about the show’s future.

Brunson developed the show, and she also serves as an executive producer alongside Patrick Schumacker, Justin Halpern, and Randall Einhorn. There is no news on when the second season will begin or how many episodes will be broadcast.
