Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has received support from 58 nations to continue her tenure as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.
This was revealed in a statement from the Geneva-based organisation, which also mentioned that members took into consideration, plans to include the Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Agreement into the WTO framework and to lay out a work plan for upcoming agricultural negotiations.
The African Group has suggested that the current Director-General should make herself available for a second term of office and that the reappointment procedure should begin as soon as possible.
DG Okonjo-Iweala’s current term expires at the end of August 2025. She is qualified for another four-year term.
Fifty-eight members took the floor to discuss and support the African Group proposal, with several speaking on behalf of groups of members.
They urged DG Okonjo-Iweala to declare her nomination for a second term as soon as possible. The majority of these members commended the DG for her first term’s accomplishments and hard work.
DG Okonjo-Iweala expressed her gratitude to the members for their assistance. “We’ve done everything together, including everything I’ve accomplished,” she remarked.
The DG continued by saying that she was positively disposed and that she took the members’ call very seriously. Regarding her intentions, she promised to come back to the members as soon as possible.
