Nigeria’s power sector has reached a key milestone, with 5,313 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated on Monday, the highest level in three years.
A statement from Mr. Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, confirmed the accomplishment.
Minister Adelabu emphasised the importance of Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in managing this surge.
He urgently urged DisCos to take a larger share of the generated power to prevent potential disruptions, emphasising their critical role in the sector’s stability.
The most recent data represent a significant increase from May 3, when Nigeria’s power generation stood at 5,000 MW.
Following a pledge made earlier this year, the federal government has set an ambitious goal of reaching 6,000 MW by the end of the year.
Adelabu emphasised his commitment to reaching this target during a recent ministerial address in Abuja, stressing the progress made since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023.
“Efforts will be made to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy,” Adelabu said, indicating continuous support for the sector’s growth and stability.
This historic feat reflects Nigeria’s continued efforts to improve its electricity infrastructure and meet rising energy demand.
