Namibia Set to Build its Largest Solar Energy Plant, Supported by Chinese Firms

Namibia’s state-owned utility, NamPower, announced on Monday that it has signed an agreement with two Chinese firms to start building on the country’s largest solar power facility, according to Reuters.

Namibia’s electricity grid, which is now dependent on imports from Zambia and South Africa, will be boosted by the addition of 100 megawatts to its existing 500 megawatt capacity.

Namibia has one of the greatest amounts of solar radiation, making off-grid solar systems a logical choice for providing clean, reliable, and economical electricity. However, one of the most significant barriers to implementing such off-grid solutions for the rural population is a lack of financial resources.

According to estimates, fewer than 10% of rural families have access to electricity (either from the electrical grid or through local power generation); however, up to 60% of Namibians live off the grid.

The German development bank KfW will finance approximately 80% of the 1.4 billion Namibian dollars ($78.33 million) solar power project, with NamPower covering the rest with its own funds.

NamPower’s managing director, Kahenge Haulofu, said the new facility will help stabilise future electricity tariffs, boost economic growth, and improve environmental sustainability.

The construction, which will be managed by China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd. and Chint New Energy Development (Zhejiang) Co. Ltd., is projected to last 18 months, with commercial operations beginning in the second quarter of 2026.
