Sound Sultan, a successful and critically renowned artist, died four months ago, leaving Nigerian music with an incalculable loss. Sound Sultan was essential in the progression of Nigerian music to become a dominant force in the global musical landscape at the turn of the 2000s, taking influence from the indigenous oral heritage and merging it with the forward-thinking propulsion of hip-hop and R&B.
Sultan left a steller output that included masterpieces such as Naija 007, SS4, and the retro-futurist Back To The Future, in which he attacked poverty, corruption, and socio-political deterioration in his exuberant but sympathetic manner.
Bankulli, a recognized A&R, composer, and performer, has teamed up with Töme, a Canadian-Nigerian afro-fusion artist, to record a tune that pays homage to the iconic singer’s charisma and far-reaching effect on the advancement of Nigerian and African music. The song is a pithy acknowledgement that Sound Sultan has risen to be with the elders and is now at a better place, unfettered by worldly problems, and is named “Motherland” after one of Sultan’s most renowned tracks.
All earnings from the song will be donated to the Sound Sultan family and estate in the spirit of the song being a homage to Sound Sultan.
